Should UPI payments remain completely free?

SAYONS
Should UPI payments remain completely free? Description UPI has become a part of everyday life in India. From small shops to online purchases, millions of people use it every day. But from 15 October 2026, a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) will apply to certain merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000. Person-to-person payments and eligible merchant payments up to ₹2,000 remain outside this charge. Consumers are not supposed to be directly charged the MDR. This raises an interesting question: Should UPI remain completely free, or is a limited merchant-side charge reasonable to support the payment ecosystem? What do you think? Vote, then tell us why. 🗳️ Poll What do you think about UPI charges? * UPI should remain completely free * Small payments free, larger ones can have a charge * Merchants should decide * Not sure 🗣️ Don’t just vote. Tell us WHY.
