RBI Raises Repo Rate to 5.50%: Inflation Control or Higher EMIs?
SAYONS
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the repo rate from 5.25% to 5.50% — its first rate hike since February 2023. The decision comes amid rising inflationary pressures and higher global energy prices.
But what does this mean for ordinary Indians?
Higher interest rates can help control inflation, but they may also increase borrowing costs for households and businesses. People with floating-rate home loans, car loans or other loans could face higher EMIs, depending on how their lenders respond.
This creates an important debate.
On one hand, controlling inflation helps protect people’s purchasing power. On the other, higher EMIs can put additional pressure on household budgets and make borrowing more expensive.
So, what should matter more right now — controlling inflation or keeping loans affordable?
Can the RBI balance both without putting too much pressure on ordinary households?
