Can India really go cashless?

SAYONS
Can India really go cashless? UPI has transformed the way people in India pay for everyday purchases — from local shops and street vendors to online shopping and bill payments. But recent debate around merchant-side charges on certain UPI transactions has raised a bigger question about the future of digital payments. Some argue that digital payments should remain completely free to encourage wider adoption. Others believe limited charges on certain merchant transactions could be reasonable if they help support the payment ecosystem. At the same time, cash remains important for many people and businesses, especially where internet connectivity, digital access or payment infrastructure can be a challenge. So, can India really become a largely cashless economy? Or will cash and digital payments always need to coexist? Vote in the poll and tell us why you think so. ⸻ 🗳️ Poll What do you think? * 🇮🇳 India can largely go cashless * 💵 Cash will always be necessary * ⚖️ Both will coexist * 🤔 Not sure If UPI stopped working for one entire day, what would you miss most? “Share your experience and perspective.”

Our financial literacy is too low right now , i don’t consider that India can go cashless !

I agree that financial literacy is an important factor. A truly cashless society requires not just digital payment facilities, but also awareness, trust, cybersecurity, and access to reliable internet. However, India can gradually move towards a more digital economy while keeping cash available for those who need it. The real question is whether we should aim for a completely cashless India or a society where everyone has the freedom to choose how they pay. What’s your view?

As an Indian citizen, I think India can move much closer to a cashless economy, but completely eliminating cash may not be practical. UPI has made everyday payments incredibly convenient, but connectivity issues, technical failures, and people who aren't comfortable with digital payments still make cash important. I believe the future is more likely to be a balance where digital payments are the first choice, while cash remains a reliable backup.
